Physiotherapy after acute Covid19 infection and Long Covid

You have survived a Covid-19 illness after a corona infection. But you continue to suffer from persistent breathing difficulties and a lack of resilience, from tiredness and exhaustion, from muscle and limb pain or even neurological symptoms. Then targeted physiotherapy or individual strength and endurance training could be a good support for you.

Not much is known about long COVID. A new study by the University Medical Center Mainz shows that around 40 percent of people struggle with health problems for a long time after a corona infection. Almost 30 percent complained that they had not regained their original level of performance after the illness. Women were slightly more likely to suffer from long-term effects than men, and age played hardly any role. There is currently not enough research into how long COVID occurs. However, there are some factors that can increase the risk of long COVID. These include: severe COVID-19 disease progression, old age, severe obesity and certain pre-existing lung and heart conditions.

A Covid-19 infection can have many different consequences (see Fig. 1). They range from reduced performance, difficulty concentrating, breathing difficulties, incorrect and protective postures (especially of the chest) to neurological symptoms such as headaches. If you have been immobile for a certain period of time, you can also expect consequences for the musculoskeletal system. These primarily affect the musculoskeletal system.

Another consequence is a reduced performance in terms of strength and strength endurance. Spiroergometry is recommended to determine the patient's current pulmonary performance. Targeted endurance training can then be carried out on this basis.

It is also known that patients benefit from strength training of the major muscle groups.

How can physiotherapy contribute to this?

In the case of these long-term consequences, known as Long Covid or Post Covid Syndrome, physiotherapy tailored to your needs can help alleviate symptoms and improve your performance and quality of life. Physiotherapy supports you in your regeneration, and manual therapy improves the mobility of the spine and corrects the poor posture. This not only promotes the patient's mobility, but also improves ventilation of the lungs. It is also important to relieve the respiratory muscles. Physiotherapy teaches exercises that promote activity and manifest the regained mobility.
